Manufacturer: Virbac (Australia) Pty Limited Registered Name Diarrest Oral Soluble Powder Scour Treatment Composition Each 248.5 g contains glucose 40.0 g, sodium acetate 5.0 g, lactose 50.0 g, sodium bicarbonate 3.0 g, rice flour 70.0 g, sodium acid pyrophosphate 3.5 g, pregelatinised starch 60.0 g, sodium chloride 8.4 g, alanine 2.0 g, potassium chloride 4.6 g, trisodium citrate 2.0 g. Actions Provides full daily maintenance energy requirements, reverses dehydration, replaces electrolytes and corrects acidosis. Immediate energy (glucose) and sustained energy (lactose and rice flour) provide superior nutritional support. Rice flour reduces faecal water loss and water consumption. Pregelatinised starch improves faecal consistency, returning faeces to a pasty consistency within 24 hours. It also adsorbs bacterial toxins, which then pass out of the gut with the faeces. Indications Supportive oral treatment for diarrhoea (scours): replacement of electrolytes, treatment of acidosis, reversal of dehydration and supplementation of energy needs in calves, lambs and foals. Precautions Use all product within 24 hours of mixing. If the animal is vomiting or in shock, do not give oral treatment. In this instance, intravenous rehydration with appropriate products (not Diarrest) may be required initially, under the supervision of a veterinary surgeon. Withholding Periods Meat. Nil. Milk. Nil. Dosage and Administration Dissolve the contents of one sachet in warm water to make a volume of 2 L. Give orally at the following dose rates, by drinking or drenching when required. To avoid further energy loss and the possibility of shock, always make up in warm water, and feed at blood temperature (40 deg. C). Prepared solution must be consumed promptly or refrigerated. Diarrhoea. Give twice daily, in place of milk based feeds. Calves 40 kg bodyweight. 2 L of prepared solution. Calves 60 kg. Up to 3 L of prepared solution. Calves 80 kg. Up to 4 L of prepared solution. Foals. Give more frequent feeds of only 500 mL to 1 L/feed, to the same daily ranges as for calves (i.e. 4 to 8 L daily). Lambs. 100 to 200 mL doses, 4 to 6 times daily (400 mL to 1 L daily). Severe diarrhoea, energy deficit, dehydration. Calves, foals. Give smaller doses at least 3 times daily, e.g. 0.5 to 1.5 L dose every 4 to 6 hours (4 to 8 L daily). Once diarrhoea (scours) has improved alternate milk feeds with Diarrest for 1 to 2 days. Alternatively, mix milk with Diarrest solution for 2 to 4 meals. Prevention. To help protect young animals when they are predisposed to diarrhoea due to feed changes, transportation stresses or contact with infection, replace one or both milk feeds with Diarrest, or give mixed feeds for one to two days.
